HANS JOACHIM JABS
Small 4x5¾ signed photo of Luftwaffe fighter ace Hans Joachim Jabs.
He shot down 50 planes in a Messerschmitt Bf 110 heavy fighter during World War
II.
Photograph signed "H.J. Jabs" in blue ink. Lead pencil
notations in unknown hand and red and purple ink stamps on verso. B/w, 4x5¾.
Jabs (1917-2003) was a German pilot in Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe
(1937-1945), where he claimed 50 air victories in the twin-engine
Messerschmitt Bf 110 heavy fighter. These victories included eight
British Spitfires and four Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain - quite an
achievement in the relatively clumsy Bf 110. 28 of his victories were in a
night fighter version of the Bf 110. Jabs appears to have been shot down only
once. This was on April 29, 1944 by six Spitfires, and he still managed to
shoot one down before being forced to land. Jabs rose to the rank of
Oberstleutnant and was made a Gechwaderkommodore, the equivalent
of a wing commander in the U. S. Air Force, in March of 1944, and was awarded
the Iron Cross and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. After
the war, he became a buisnessman and public servant. Lightly toned, creased and
bowed. Signature is lightly smeared in places and has poor adhesion but is
legible. Light scratches on image (not visible head-on). Otherwise in fine
condition.
