HANS PETER BERTELSEN
Black and white 3¼x5½ full length photo of Bertelsen in a three-piece suit, signed on the back in blue ink. Bertelsen, in much more informal dress, was the inspiration for John Greenleaf Whittier's 1855 poem The Barefoot Boy.
Photograph Signed: "H. P. Bertelsen/Blair, Nebraska" on verso in blue ink.Black and blue ink and lead pencil notations on front and verso in unknown hand. B/w, 3¼x5½ overall, 3x5¼ image, one surface. According to notations on this card, Bertelen signed this photograph on Oct. 27, 1930, when he was 85 years old. It also claims that he died in 1934. Bertelsen (1846-1930) was the inspiration for John Greenleaf Whittier's 1855 poem The Barefoot Boy. Reportedly, Whittier saw Bertelsen - "Barefoot boy, with cheek of tan!/With thy turned-up pantaloons,/And thy merry whistled tunes" - on a farm in Blair, Nebraska and was so enchanted seeing him whistling as he worked that he asked his parents for a photograph of the boy. The photo served as the inspiration for Bertelsen's poem, which in turn inspired a famous chromolithograph print by Eastman Johnson. Bertelsen later became a minister for the Dutch Lutheran Church. Lightly toned, soiled, silvered and bowed. Light scuff marks on image (not visible head-on). Adhesive residue at both left corners and on verso (no show-through). Otherwise, fine condition.
