HAROLD E. HUGHES
Signing as a US Senator, shown in conversation with a
colleague
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Michael/Harold E.
Hughes/U.S.S./Iowa". B/w, 8x10. A combat veteran of the European theater
in World War II, Harold Hughes (1922-1996), a Democrat, was Governor of
Iowa (1963-1967) and US Senator from that state (1969-1975), declining to
run for re-election. A liberal Democrat, Hughes announced for the Democratic
Presidential nomination in 1972, but - hating the requisite fundraiser - he
dropped out early. Believing that AA membership and a religious awakening had
turned his life around in the early 1950s, Hughes stressed those themes

sponsored creation of the National Institute of Drug Abuse. After
retiring (by choice) from the Senate, he joined former Nixon aide Charles
Colson in his religious work, and appeared as himself in the Colson biofilm
Born Again. Light surface creases. Signature lightly beaded, but legible.
Otherwise, fine condition.
