HAROLD LARWOOD and WILFRED RHODES
Signatures of the renowned English cricket stars
Signatures: "H Larwood" and "W. Rhodes", 3x2 irregularly cut slips, affixed to 6¼x3¾ album leaf. Album leaf contains one additional signature: "H. Crapper". HAROLD LARWOOD (1904-1995) was an English cricket player known for his fast and accurate bowling. He turned pro at age 18. During the Ashes competition against Australia in 1933, Larwood was instructed by team captain Douglas Jardine to throw deliberately at the bodies of the Australian players, forcing them to defend their bodies with their bats and produce easy catches. This "bodyline tactic" was successful, winning the match for England, but it provoked a crisis in Anglo-Australian relations. Larwood refused to apologize for a tactic he had been instructed to use, and never played for England again. Cricket rules were changed shortly thereafter to prohibit bodyline. WILFRED RHODES (1877-1973) was an English professional cricket player, thought to be one of the world's best slow left arm bowlers, and who played 58 Test matches for England between 1899 through 1930. In Tests, he took 127 wickets and scored 2,325 runs, becoming the first ever Englishman to complete the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in Test matches, and also still holds the world records for the most appearances made in first-class cricket (1110) and for the most wickets taken (4204). Rhodes also became the oldest player to appear in a Test match in 1930 at the age of 52 years and 165 days. Lightly creased, with ¼-inch tear below signature. Mounting page lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
