Sepia photograph of the ill-fated silent film star, in suit with his hand to his chin
Photograph signed: "Sincerely yours/Harold Lockwood". Sepia 6x8 signed in white ink. Harold Lockwood (1887-1918) was one of the original matinee idols of the 1910s. He appeared in over twenty-five films during the World War I era and was part of the star-studded cast of Intolerance (1916) that included Lillian Gish, Douglas Fairbanks , Wallace Reid and many more. He made 23 films with May Allison, forming one of the screens first popular romantic couples. In December 1918, Motion Picture magazine named him one of the top 6 film stars, but he was dead by the time the article appeared. Lockwood died at the age of 31, from the Spanish influenza that killed between 25 and 100 million world-wide, apparently having contracted it while working in a war bonds booth. Few of Lockwood's films survive, none apparently in VHS or DVD. That absence, and his early death, may explain why Lockwood is not as well remembered as some of his contemporaries. Tack holes at top and bottom edges. Lower right corner creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
