HAROLD ROSENTHAL
The long-time editor of Opera magazine signed this typed letter dated April
9, 1973
Typed Letter Signed: “Harold Rosenthal” in bright blue ink. One page. 8x9¾. Dated
April 9, 1973. Letterhead from Opera magazine. Harold Rosenthal (1917-1987)
was an opera critic and journalist. He's best known as one of the founding
employees of Opera magazine, a publication based in London. He served as
editor from 1953 to 1986. In addition to this position, he was chief archivist the
Royal Opera House at Covent Garden. He drew from his experience there for
his book Two Centuries of Opera at Covent Garden (1958). Throughout his life,
he combatted the image of opera music as elitist and tried to keep ticket prices low
so people of all levels of wealth could attend. Just five years before his death, he
published an autobiography titled My Mad World of Opera (1982). Toned.
