immunologist and microbiologist Bishop, born in 1936, and American virologist Varmus,
born in 1939,shared a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1989 with Harold E.
Varmus "for their discovery of the cellular origin of retroviral oncogenes". In other words,
they discovered that retroviruses can cause malignant tumors. Varmus headed the U.S.
National Institutes of Health during the Clinton administration. Bishop directs the Hooper
Research Foundation at UCSF. Bishop, who won the National Medal of Science in 2003, has
been on the faculty of the University of California/San Francisco since 1968, its chancellor
