HARPER L. KNOWLES, CO-SIGNED BY: LAWRENCE V. COTT
The two members of the Western Research Foundation sign this typed letter to activist and anti-communist Benjamin Mandel. Extremely rare!
Typed letter signed: "Harper" and "Larry" in black ink. 8½x11. November 13, 1967. Typed on letterhead of Western Research Foundation, San Francisco to Mr. Ben Mandel. Mandel was a teacher and activist who became director of research for the House Un-American Activities Committee. In part: "Dear Ben, We were both saddened to learn of your departure from the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee, but we also know that after three decades of untiring effort on behalf of our country you have deserved a rest. [...] we doubt that anyone would challenge the statement that you are one of the pioneers, one of those 'premature anti-communists' who has devoted nearly a lifetime to combatting the nation's enemies. The country is greatly in your debt, Ben." HARPER L. KNOWLES founded the Western Research Foundation, which was an anti-communist blacklist operation prominent in the 1970s and 1980s. LAWRENCE V. COTT was the Research Director of the Western Research Foundation. Both signers merit further research. Lightly toned arounde edges. Normal mailing folds. Corners rounded. Three notches in right edge from binder. Otherwise, fine condition.
