HARRIET MARTINEAU. Signature: "Yours most truly/Harriet Martineau", 4¼x½, clipped from letter and affixed to 4½x1¼ sheet. "Miss Martineau" written in unknown hand at upper margin of mounting sheet. British author Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was known for her writings on social and political issues, novels and works for children. She began speaking out on women's rights in 1823, with an anonymous article for "Monthly Repository", the Unitarian journal, and continued to submit articles for the publication, eventually moving to London to work for the journal for a small wage. In 1832, she published Illustrations of Political Economy, followed by Poor Laws and Paupers Illustrated (1834), both bestsellers that brought her financial stability. Martineau published her first novel, Deerbrook, in 1839 and The Playfellow, a volume of children's stories, two years later. In 1852, she joined the staff of London's "Daily News", writing some 1600 articles for the paper over the next 16 years, primarily on women's rights and social issues. Both sheets lightly soiled. Signature sheet irregularly cut. Mounting sheet has irregular lower edge. Overall, fine condition.
