Signature from the American author dated 1882, inscribed to a young lady "with great pleasure"
Autograph note signed: "With great pleasure,/Harriet Prescott Spofford/Nerburyport, Mass. April 27. 1882/For:/Miss Marie R. Brickensteyn", in black ink, 3½x2. Harriet Prescott Spofford (1835-1921)became a writer out of necessity, working for Boston publications by writing stories, sometimes writing for 15 hours a day. She reached prominence after one of her publications in Atlantic Monthly about Parisian culture was well received by the magazine's editor. She then began writing fiction, having a particular favoritism toward gothic romances with female leads. Works of Spofford's include Sir Rohan's Ghost (1860), The Servant Girl Question (1881), and Old Madame, and Other Tragedies (1900). Small stain on upper margin. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Paper fragment on verso. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
