HARRISON E. SALISBURY
1955 Pulitzer Prize winner, Salisbury responds to a question about
the 1991 Gulf War
Typed Letter Signed: "Harrison E. Salisbury", 1p. 6 ¼ x7,
personal letterhead. Taconic, Connecticut, 1991 April 20. To: Mr.
Stanhope. In full: "A very big questionyou pose. I am glad I m answering it
about a month late because we now have better perspective. Yes, it was a
successful war in the military sense. But let us remember that we defeated a 3rd
or 4th rate country with the armament we built up against Russia. Would we have
been so successful against Mocow? Perhaps. But not with thattiny toll of lives
and quick time interval. Now we see the costs of lack of thinking of
consequences. The public is reassessing. And well it should. It is easy to fire
a bullet. But hard to undo its damage. I fear Iraq willhave a nasty taste in our
mouths for a long time tocome. Best regards," Harrison E. Salisbury
(1908-1993) won his Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1955.
Salisbury was the first regular New York Times correspondent in Moscow
after WWII and was the first well-know journalist to oppose the Vietnam War

War documentary film In the Year of the Pig. Well published, some of his
books are: American in Russia (1955), Behind the Lines-Hanoi (1967),
Without Fear of Favor: The New York Times and Its Times (1980), and his
last Heroes of My Time (1993). One horizontal mailing fold. Very lightly
creased. Fine condition.
