HARRY BACHE SMITH and ARTHUR PLAYFAIR
The American librettist and English stage star sign a clipping from a book of quotations.
Quotation signed: "Arthur B. Smith" and on verso "Arthur Playfair", 4x1¼. Each has signed beneath a quotation (not his own), evidently clipped from a book of quotations. HARRY BACHE SMITH (1860-1936) was America's most prolific librettist, writing over 300 librettos and over 6,000 song lyrics. He worked on scripts for Victor Herbert operettas, but also on his own compositions. Among his successful plays, Robin Hood, first staged on Broadway in 1891, was revived several times through the 1940s. Smith also worked on the book for several Ziegfeld Follies. His younger brother, Robert Bache Smith, was also a successful librettist. English actor ARTHUR PLAYFAIR (1869-1918) starred in Edwardian musical comedies and later in music revues in England and the US. He appeared in the silent film Judged By Appearances (1916). His cousin was actor Nigel Playfair. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
