Vintage 11x14 photo of the famed magician
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Jack Sampson/with every good wish/Harry Blackstone/1938". B/w, 11x14. Born Henry Boughton, Blackstone (1885-1965) and his younger brother, Pete, started in Vaudeville in 1910 as "Harry Bouton & Co." Blackstone later toured as "Frederick the Great" until WWI, and made his first appearance as "Blackstone, World's Master Magician" on January 7, 1918. During the 1920s, he was noted for his spectacular illusions, including the "Vanishing Horse", "Vanishing Automobile" and "Vanishing Camel". He toured with USO shows during World War II. Blackstone wrote several books on magic and inspired a comic book and radio show. His son, Harry Blackstone, Jr., was also a magician. Corner creases. Chipped in upper left background. Minor tears on right and upper edge. Diagonal crease in upper right has been repaired with clear tape on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
