HARRY BLACKSTONE, SR. and LIBBY HOLMAN. Self-Caricature signed: "Harry Blackstone/2-22-1945", 5½x4½ album leaf. On verso, magazine photograph signed: "From Libby Holman". B/w with magenta hue, 2½x3. HARRY BLACKSTONE, SR. (1885-1965), born Henry Boughton, decided on a career in magic at the age of 13 after seeing a performance by Kellar, the leading magician of the day. During the 1920s and 1930s, Blackstone was one of the best known magicians in America. He was noted for his spectacular illusions, including the "Vanishing Horse", "Vanishing Automobile" and "Vanishing Camel". Blackstone wrote a number of how-to books on magic, explaining card and sleight of hand tricks, one of his fortes. Actress and "torch singer" LIBBY HOLMAN, born Elizabeth Holzman, is best known for her signature song, "Moanin' Low", which she introduced in the 1929 Broadway production, The Little Show. A stage and nightclub star from the late 1920s, Holman debuted on Broadway in 1927 and would play her last show on the Great White Way in 1954 (a one-woman show at the age of 50). On June 18, 1971, the 67-year-old blues singer was found dead in the front seat of her Rolls Royce in front of her Connecticut mansion, "Treetops". Album leaf lightly creased. Ink smudged at the upper loop of the "B" of Blackstone. Magazine photograph is lightly creased, light vertical crease at the "L" of Libby. Tape remnants and minor paper loss on verso, minor show through at lower right corner of front. Verso is lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
