Blue ink signature on a 5x3 card with typed caption
Signature: "Harry F. Byrd Jr.", 5x3 card. Typed caption: "United States Senator from Virginia - 1966." Harry F. Byrd, Jr. (1914-2013) assumed control of his father's chain of Shenandoah Valley newspapers in 1939. In 1965 he moved from the Virginia state legislature to the US Senate, replacing his retiring father, who had held the seat since 1933. A staunch fiscal conservative like his father, Byrd introduced legislation which would have required a balanced federal budget. First elected as a Democrat, Byrd became an Independent in 1970 and won re-election with that label, although he continued to caucus with the Democrats. He retired from the Senate in 1983, but remained active in the newspaper business until 2001. Paperclip crease upper left. Paper residue (previous mounting) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
