HARRY F. BYRD JR.
Inscribed color 8x10 photo, in checkered suit
Photograph inscribed and signed: "For Doug Voegler - Best Wishes -/Harry F. Byrd Jr.". Color, 8x10½ overall, image 8x8¾, one surface. Harry F. Byrd, Jr. (1914-2013) assumed control of his father's chain of Shenandoah Valley newspapers in 1939. In 1965 he moved from the Virginia state legislature to the US Senate, replacing his retiring father, who had held the seat since 1933. A staunch fiscal conservative like his father, Byrd introduced legislation which would have required a balanced federal budget. First elected as a Democrat, Byrd became an Independent in 1970 and won re-election with that label, although he continued to caucus with the Democrats. He retired from the Senate in 1983, but remained active in the newspaper business until 2001. Vertical crease down center. Adhesive residue (previous mounting) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
