HARRY F. BYRD JR.
Typed Letter as US Senator, thanking a woman who sent him an Acrostic
(1966)
Typed Letter signed: "Harry F. Byrd Jr." as US Senator,
1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1966 April 26. On letterhead of the
Senate Armed Service Committee to Mrs. Sarah Bateman, Hagerstown, Maryland.
In full: "Thank you for your letter and enclosure which arrived this
morning. I greatly enjoyed your Acrostic and deeply appreciate your kind
reference to the Byrd name. I will preserve your composition in my scrapbook. I
am glad to send you my autograph. Again - my thanks to you, Mrs. Bateman, and I
send you my best wishes. Sincerely". Harry F. Byrd, Jr. (1914-2013)
assumed control of his father's chain of Shenandoah Valley newspapers in 1939.
In 1965 he moved from the Virginia state legislature to the US Senate, replacing
his retiring father, who had held the seat since 1933. A staunch fiscal
conservative like his father, Byrd introduced legislation which would have
required a balanced federal budget. First elected as a Democrat, Byrd became
an Independent in 1970 and won re-election with that label, although he
continued to caucus with the Democrats. He retired from the Senate in 1983,
but remained active in the newspaper business until 2001. Light paperclip crease
upper left. Normal mailing folds. Fine condition.
