his franked Senate envelope
Signature: "Harry Byrd", as US Senator, 5x3 card.
Affixed to an 8½x11 page which also bears a newspaper photo and a Senate
transmittal envelope with Byrd's ink stamp frank (3 surfaces). Harry Flood
Byrd (1887-1966), a conservative Democrat, was a former newspaper
publisher and apple grower and had previously served as Governor of Virginia
(1926-1930).He was appointed to the U.S. Senate to
fill a vacancy in 1933. His financial expertise is evidenced by his
appointments to the Committee on Finance and the Joint Committees of the
Reduction of Nonessential Federal Expenditures and Internal
Revenue Taxation. Byrd's political organization dominated Virginia
politics for many years. Byrd was the younger brother of Admiral and explorer,
Richard Byrd. The Senator resigned in 1966, eleven months before he died. He
was succeeded by his son, Harry F. Byrd, Jr. From the collection of Ralph
Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the
China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward went on to become President and
CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major
home product conglomerate. Adhesive on verso (affixing card to the page).
