Senator Byrd writes in response to autograph seeker
Typed Letter signed: "Harry F. Byrd". 1p. 8x10¼, US Senate Committee on Finance letterhead. Washington D.C., 1962 January 22. To: Mr. A.S. Hodges, Headland, Alabama. In Full: "My dear Mr. Hodges: I have just received you letter of January 18, with enclosures. I am returning the cards you sent, which I have autographed for you. I regret very much that I do not have a photograph available at this time.With kindest regards, I am Faithfully yours," Byrd (1887-1966) was a former newspaper publisher and apple grower and had previously served as Governor of Virginia (1926-1930).He was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill a vacancy in 1933. His financial expertise is evidenced by his appointments to the Committee on Finance and the Joint Committees of the Reduction of Nonessential Federal Expenditures and Internal Revenue Taxation. Byrd was the younger brother of Admiral and explorer, Richard Byrd. The Senator resigned in 1966, eleven months before he died. He was succeeded by his son, Harry F. Byrd, Jr. One vertical and three horizontal folds-one directly through the signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
