Typed Letter signed: "Harry F. Byrd". 1p. 8x10¼, US Senate
Committee on Finance letterhead. Accompanied by typed envelope. Washington
D.C., 1951 July 11. To: Mr. Wade E. Edwards, Los Angles, California. In
Full: "My dear Mr. Edwards: I want to thank you so much for your
exceedingly gracious letter of July 6. I have had reprints made of my speech in
Atlanta, and I am very glad to enclose you several. I am very grateful for the
suggestion you have made, but I have no aspirations whatever to be a candidate
for the Presidency. With very best wishes, I am faithfully yours,"
Byrd (1887-1966) was a former newspaper publisher and apple grower
and had previously served as Governor of Virginia (1926-1930).He
was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill a vacancy in 1933. His
financial expertise is evidenced by his appointments to the Committee on Finance
and the Joint Committees of the Reduction of Nonessential Federal
Expenditures and Internal Revenue Taxation. Byrd was the
younger brother of Admiral and explorer, Richard Byrd. The Senator resigned in
1966, eleven months before he died. He was succeeded by his son, Harry F. Byrd,
Jr. Normal mailing folds toned and lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
