Senator Byrd writes to an ardent fan regarding his lack of desire to become President
Typed Letter signed: "Harry F. Byrd". 1p. 8x10¼, US Senate Committee on Finance letterhead. Accompanied by typed envelope. Washington D.C., 1951 July 11. To: Mr. Wade E. Edwards, Los Angles, California. In Full: "My dear Mr. Edwards: I want to thank you so much for your exceedingly gracious letter of July 6. I have had reprints made of my speech in Atlanta, and I am very glad to enclose you several. I am very grateful for the suggestion you have made, but I have no aspirations whatever to be a candidate for the Presidency. With very best wishes, I am faithfully yours," Byrd (1887-1966) was a former newspaper publisher and apple grower and had previously served as Governor of Virginia (1926-1930). His financial expertise is evidenced by his appointments to the Committee on Finance and the Joint Committees of the Reduction of Nonessential Federal Expenditures and Internal Revenue Taxation. Byrd was the younger brother of Admiral and explorer, Richard Byrd. The Senator resigned in 1966, eleven months before he died. He was succeeded by his son, Harry F. Byrd, Jr. Normal mailing folds toned and lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition. Two pieces
