HARRY GOLDEN
Photograph signed: "Harry Golden/July 4, 1970". B/w, 7¾x10. Shown with
radio TV personality George Sanders. New York stockbroker Herschele Goldhirsch
was convicted of mail fraud in 1929, after losing clients' money in unsuccessful
speculations. Imprisoned for three years - he was pardoned in 1973 by President
Nixon - he found a new career while editing the prison newsletter. Changing his
name to Harry GOLDEN (1903-1981), he moved to Charlotte, North
Carolina, where he soon founded his own newspaper, "The Charlotte
Israelite". His humorous newspaper columns, lampooning segregation and
racism and waxing nostalgic about New York's Lower East Side, became nationally
popular. His writings were published in fifteen books, including
bestsellers Only in America (1958), For 2-cents Plain (1959)
and Enjoy! Enjoy! (1960). He was a popular guest on TV talk shows.
Light creases, most not visible head-on. Left margin neatly removed. Otherwise,
fine condition.
