Photograph signed: "Harry Hughes," in black felt tip. B/w, 8x10. Harry Roe Hughes (b.1926) is an American Democratic politician who served as the 57th governor of Maryland from 1979 to 1987. After graduating with a law degree from The George Washington University Law School, Hughes became a member of the Maryland House of Delegates (1995-1959), representing Caroline County. In 1959, he was elected to the Maryland Senate, and twelve years later he became the Secretary of Transportation for the state of Maryland. In 1978, Hughes beat out John Glenn Beall, Jr. for the gubernatorial election. Under his administration, Hughes was successful in initiating foreign trade and preserving Chesapeake Bay.
