HARRY JAMES
The bandleader touts Chesterfield cigarettes.
Autograph Letter signed: "Harry James", 1p, 6x9¼. On
letterhead of the Hotel Lincoln. New York, New York, no date. To "Dear
Sirs". In full: "I would like to say that I think 'Chesterfields'
are the best cigarettes made. You may quote me." The son of circus
performers, James (1916-1983) was an outstanding trumpet player who left
Benny Goodman's orchestra to form his own band in 1939. A popular favorite in
the swing era, he continued to tour with a more jazz-oriented sound after the
big bands waned in popularity. A star on radio, he had his own TV program in
1951. James appeared in several films in the 1940s and 1950s; his dubbed trumpet
is heard in Kirk Douglas' Man With a Horn (1950). Paper clip impression
in upper left has created a ¼" tear and pinhead sized hole. Horizontal fold
touches "y" in "Harry". Otherwise, fine condition.
