Check signed: "Harry James" in blue ink, 8¼x3½. Woodland Hills, California, September 5,
1982.Check no. 67761 drawn on the account of the Harry James Orchestra at the Bank of
America, Beverly Hills, California. Payable to La Costa in the amount of $138.96. The son of
circus performers, Harry James (1916-1983) was an outstanding trumpet player who left
Benny Goodman's orchestra to form his own band in 1939. A favorite in the swing era,
he continued to tour with a more jazz-oriented sound after the big bands waned in
popularity. A star on radio, he had his own TV program in 1951. James appeared in several
films in the 1940s and 1950s; his dubbed trumpet is heard in Kirk Douglas's Man With a
Horn (1950). Ink note in an unknown hand: "9/5 dues" at left. Vertical fold at center.
Pinhead-sized hole at top center. Bank cancellation stamps on front and verso, affecting
signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
