HARRY L. HAWTHORNE. Partly Printed DS: "H.L. Hawthorne/1 lieut. 6th Artry.", 1p, 13¾x8¼. Not filled in. Docketed (unknown hand) on verso. Docket, which is Voucher No. 433, is for the "Payroll of Light Baty 'D' 6th Artillery, Captain A.B. Dyer" for the month of March and April, 1899. At upper portion, it is noted that $655.60 was paid on June 22nd 1899. "Maj. M.F. Sheary." stamped at upper margin. Harry LeRoy Hawthorne (1859-1948), Second Lieutenant, 2d U.S. Artillery, was awarded the Medal of Honor on October 11, 1892 for distinguished conduct in battle with hostile Indians for service at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota on December 29, 1890. A career military officer, Hawthorne served with several artillery units, rising through the ranks to retire as a Colonel. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Lightly creased with folds, light vertical fold at the "H" of Hawthorne. Ink smudged at the lower portion of that "H" and at the upper loop of the "L" in Lieut. Show through of ink blot at lower right corner, lightly soiled at upper margin. Docket side is lightly soiled, particularly at folds. Pencil note (unknown hand) at lower margin of docket side. Overall, fine condition.
