HARRY PRATT JUDSON
The second president of the University of Chicago signed this handwritten letter in ink
Autograph Letter Signed: “Harry Pratt Judson” in ink. 4½x3½. Dated January 4, 1921. Sent to Mr. Ashley T. Cole. In Full: The New Year, I trust, will be a happy one for you personally and will see a beginning of the restoration of our shattered world - a restoration which must be slow, and will need all the energy and all the wisdom of our civilization”. The recipient is Ashley Trimble Cole (1876-1965), a prominent New York City lawyer. While Judson does not refer to any particular reason to refer to the world as “shattered,” he might be referring to the overall atmosphere left by WWI as well as the ongoing recession, which did not end until six months after he wrote this letter. Harry Pratt Judson (1849-1927) was a historian who served as the president of the University of Chicago from 1907 to 1923. His books discuss a variety of historical subjects, including the United States, the Roman Empire, the state of Illinois, and business and constitutional issues. Before he was named president of the university, he served as the dean of the faculty of arts, literature, and science. Toned. Note on verso in unknown hand. Mounting remnants on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
