HARRY MILLER
Rare letter from the "Fighting Irish" 1908 team captain, speaking of his time with the Notre Dame Football team
Autograph letter signed: "Harry Miller", in blue ink, 7¼x10½. May 16, 1985.Wilmington, Delaware. In part: "Dear Gene, I'm inclosing a memo of football at Notre Dame in my time 1906 to 1910 which I detailed (adlib) for [illegible] 15 or 20 years ago from which he wrote his own conclusions + summary. It may help to give you a back ground and you may like to embellish the 2 stories". At the age of 17, Harry Miller (b. 1889) began playing for the Notre Dame Football team, beginning as a half-back in 1906. He was a popular player among the team, and in 1907, changed his position to centre, and was subsequently elected as team captain for 1908. He also began being called by the nickname "Red", presumably due to the color of his hair. However, after 1909, mentions of Miller's football career become more and more scarce, and his last two years in football have not been chronicled. After his college career, Miller became a lawyer, but still remained heavily involved in college football throughout his life. Harry was one of five brothers to play for Notre Dame, with his brother, Don Miller, being most notable as one of the "Four Horsemen" for the 1924 Notre Dame team. His son, Creighton, became a prominent member of the star 1943 team. Paper clip crease on top margin. Heavily toned. Adhesive residue on right margin under date. Corners lightly worn and creased. Bottom left corner clipped. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
