HARRY REID
Signed letter to U.S. Senator Daniel Moynihan, thanking him for his support on the opposition of nuclear waste dumping in the proposed Yucca Mountain waste repository
Typed Letter signed: "Harry" as U.S. Senator and "R" on postscript, 1p, 6¼x8½. On his personal Senate stationery. Washington, D.C., 2000 February 10. To Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Washington, D.C. In full: "Thank you very much for supporting the effort to defeat S.1287, the 'Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2000.' Your vote against this bill represents a strong statement in favor of environmental protection and helped ensure that the Senate would uphold President Clinton's veto, if that proves necessary. I have spoken many times about the necessity of making sure that science, not politics, determines the suitability of any proposed nuclear repository. Our efforts today ensured that the Environmental Protection Agency will move ahead, unimpeded, with their radiation standard rulemaking for Yucca Mountain. Your support on this issue is important to me and to the people of Nevada." Postscript in Reid's hand: "P.S. This note is what friendship is all about. R." Originally proposed in 1987, the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository was planned to hold all of the country's nuclear waste in a northwest area of Nevada. It was approved in 2002, but funding was cut in 2011 due to "political reasons", with no nuclear waste ever being dumped at the facility. HARRY REID (1939-2021), a Nevada Democrat, has served as Nevada's congressman (1983-1987) and a U.S. senator (since 1987). He was the Democratic Whip from 1999 to 2005 and functioned as both the Senate Majority Leader (2007-2015)and the Senate Minority Leader (beginning in 2015). Reid, who previously served in Nevada's House of Representatives (1969-1970), was the Lieutenant Governor of Nevada (1970-1974) and an unsuccessful candidate for Mayor of Las Vegas in 1975. Directly from the sale of the estate of Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Moynihan (1927-2003) represented New York in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat for four terms (1977-2001). A prolific author, he served in the administrations of four Presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford. Estate inventory numbers stamped at left margin and written in ink at top edge. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
