HARRY S. NEW
The U.S. Senator writes to an associate, saying he is not sure why the associate has been passed up as Minister to Lithuania, and should seek further clarification
Typed letter signed: "Harry S. New", in black ink, 1 page, 7x8¾. April 20, 1923. Washington, D.C. In full: "My dear Doctor Edelman: I have received your letter of April 15 upon my return from a postal convention in Indianapolis. Inasmuch as the matter you discuss has been between you and Mr. Christian for sometime, I have a natural delicacy about entering into it at this stage, for reasons which you will readily appreciate. After giving careful consideration to the matter I have come to the conclusion that perhaps the best thing would be for you to again see Mr. Christian. It may be that something arose which made it impossible for you to be named as the Minister to Lithuania and that he has something else in mind for you. Sincerely yours". Harry S. New (1858-1937, born in Indianapolis, Indiana) was a US Senator from Indiana from 1917 to 1923 and US Postmaster General from 1923 to 1929 appointed by President Warren Harding and continuing in office under Calvin Coolidge. He was also a reporter, editor, part owner and publisher of the Indianapolis Journal from 1878 to 1903. Multiple folds. Toned. Corners slightly worn. Light surface creases. Staining along bottom half of page. Otherwise, fine condition.
