Inscribed photograph signed: "To Stark/Soundlessly/Yours/Harry
Secombe", in blue ink, 7¾x9¾. Multitalented Harry Secombe
(1921-2001, born in Swansea, Wales, England) was an English comedian, actor,
singer and writer who was one of the charter members of the revolutionary
1950s radio comedy show The Goon Show, which included Peter Sellers and
presaged comedy shows like Monty Python's Flying Circus. Secombe
served in the British Army during World War II, where he met future Goon
Show co-star Spike Milligan. While working as a comic London's Soho district
and on various radio shows, he started gathering material for a radio show with
Sellers, Milligan and Michael Bentine. This show, which debuted as Crazy
People in 1951, was renamed The Goon Show in 1952 and ran until
1960. Secombe also appeared on the stage and over 20 TV shows and movies,
including a famous role as Mr. Bumble in the 1968 film adaptation of
Oliver!. His most well-known roles came after The Goon Show
and included the stage production of Pickwick (1963), whose song If I
Ruled the World he made famous. Secombe also wrote novels and children's
stories and, from 1983 to 1995, hosted the religious TV programs Highway
(1983-1993) and Songs of Praise (1995). He was knighted in 1981. Corners
lightly worn and creased. Notches on bottom left edge. Light surface creases.
