HARRY SECOMBE
A photograph of the comedian and actor, signed "Soundlessly yours"
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Stark/Soundlessly/Yours/Harry Secombe", in blue ink, 7¾x9¾. Multitalented Harry Secombe (1921-2001, born in Swansea, Wales, England) was an English comedian, actor, singer and writer who was one of the charter members of the revolutionary 1950s radio comedy show The Goon Show, which included Peter Sellers and presaged comedy shows like Monty Python's Flying Circus. Secombe served in the British Army during World War II, where he met future Goon Show co-star Spike Milligan. While working as a comic London's Soho district and on various radio shows, he started gathering material for a radio show with Sellers, Milligan and Michael Bentine. This show, which debuted as Crazy People in 1951, was renamed The Goon Show in 1952 and ran until 1960. Secombe also appeared on the stage and over 20 TV shows and movies, including a famous role as Mr. Bumble in the 1968 film adaptation of Oliver!. His most well-known roles came after The Goon Show and included the stage production of Pickwick (1963), whose song If I Ruled the World he made famous. Secombe also wrote novels and children's stories and, from 1983 to 1995, hosted the religious TV programs Highway (1983-1993) and Songs of Praise (1995). He was knighted in 1981. Corners lightly worn and creased. Notches on bottom left edge. Light surface creases. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
