HARRY RANDALL
Vintage photo of the pantomime star, whose satire addressed the Jack
the Ripper case (3½x5). A rare signature.
Photograph signed: "Sincerely Yours/Harry Randall". B/w, 3½x5.
English pantomime star Harry Randall (1860-1932) first performed
professionally in 1884. From 1904, following the retirement of his friend Dan
Leno, until his own retirement a decade later, he was principal dame at
London's Drury Lane Theatre. Even before he rose to top billing, Randall was
noted for his special acts, the most noteworthy of which was "Who Killed Cock
Robin" (1888), intended by him as a barbed criticism of London Police
Commissioner Sir Charles Warren for failing to catch "Jack the Ripper". The
Prince of Wales (future King Edward VII), attended a performance, and Warren was
obliged to resign soon thereafter. Randall wrote a memoir about his life in
the theatre. Soiled. Signature beaded, but legible. Heavy adhesive residue on
verso. Corners rounded and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
