HARRY WIERE
Harry Weire of the Wiere Brothers comedy trio signed this envelope in the return address on the flap in 1987.
Autograph envelope signed: "Harry Wiere" on flap with Sherman Oaks, California address, 9½x4. Postmarked Van Nuys, California, 1987 and Las Vegas, Nevada, 1987. Hand-addressed to Mr. Todd M. Axelrod, Las Vegas, Nevada. With one 22¢ yellow-and-brown "Reticulated Helmet" stamp affixed. HARRY WIERE (1906-1992) was one-third of the comedy trio The Wiere Brothers, which included his brothers HERBERT WIERE (1908-1999) and SYLVESTER WIERE (1909-1970). The three started performing on stage in 1922 and made their American debut in 1935. Highly talented, the Wiere Brothers worked comedy into an act that included singing, dancing, acrobatics and playing a myriad of instruments. They were headliners in theatres and night clubs, but Hollywood didn't utilize their talents very often. Highlights of their film careers include cameos in the Bob Hope and Bing Crosby "Road" comedy Road to Rio (1947) and Elvis Presley's Double Trouble (1967), their last film appearance. They also had their own TV series, Oh, Those Bells (1962). The Wiere Brothers went into semi-retirement after Sylvester's death. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Normal postal stamps, which touch return address, but not signature. Staple hole near top edge touches return address, but not signature. Discoloration at bottom edge from change-of-address label touches hand-written address, but not signature. Light tear at top edge. Rounded corners. Envelope has been neatly opened, with paper loss on envelope (no show-through). Return address label has separated from envelope. Otherwise, fine condition.
