Harry Wiere handwrote this letter in 1987. It accompanied a script for the pilot episode of the Wiere Brothers' TV series Oh! Those Bells, and Wiere promised to send along more items.
Autograph letter signed "Harry Wiere/Wiere Bros" in body and "HW." in postscript. With pencil notations in Wiere's hand.2 pages, 6x8¾, 1 sheet, folded at top edge, front and verso. Dated July 17 1987. In full: "Dear Mr Axelrod, Enclosed the Pilot script [not included] of our T. V. Series !Oh Those Bells.. Maybe you would like to have il [sic]. One day I shall send you an original english Variety Bill from our early years in England which we love. I think my daughter in San Diego has a few. Regards". Postscripted: "P. S. I found the other day a small photo show us starring (in lighl [sic]) at the Wilbur Clarks Desert Inn about 1940-; before the Super stars ruined it for the small stars. (such is life I chall [sic] have it enlarged and send you one!" HARRY WIERE (1906-1992, born in Berlin, Germany) was one-third of the comedy trio The Wiere Brothers, which included his brothers HERBERT WIERE (1908-1999, born in Vienna, Austria) and SYLVESTER WIERE (1909-1970, born in Prague, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary, now the Czech Republic). The three started performing on stage in 1922 and made their American debut in 1935. Highly talented, the Wiere Brothers worked comedy into an act that included singing, dancing, acrobatics and playing a myriad of instruments. They were headliners in theatres and night clubs, but Hollywood didn't utilize their talents very often. Highlights of their film careers include cameos in the Bob Hope and Bing Crosby "Road" comedy Road to Rio (1947) and Elvis Presley's Double Trouble (1967), their last film appearance. They also had their own TV series, Oh! Those Bells (1962). The Wiere Brothers went into semi-retirement after Sylvester's death. Lightly toned. Light show-through from both sides, which touches handwriting but not signatures. Impressions on page 1 from another letter, which touch handwriting but not signature. Otherwise in fine condition.
