HARTLEY SHAWCROSS, BARON SHAWCROSS
Signature from the Chief British Prosecutor at the Nuremberg War
Crimes Trials in response to a request for his autograph. Extremely
rare!
Typed Note signed: "Hartley Shawcross", 1p, 4¼x3½ affixed to
4¾x4½ sheet. Temple, England, 1954 November 29. In full: "As
requested, I send you herewith a copy of my autograph." Printed photograph
and biographical information affixed at left. Hartley Shawcross
(1902-2003), British Attorney-General, was the Chief British Prosecutor at the
Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. Shawcross differed from his American, Soviet
and French prosecutors, using the trials not as a means of victory for the
Allied forces but instead as a demonstration of the laws being broken. He
remained in law for several years after the Nuremberg trials, presiding over
other trials and briefly serving as President of the Board of Trade.
He retired from law in 1951 and left Parliament in 1958, saying that he had
simply grown tired of party politics. Signature page separated, cut just
below date before being affixed to sheet. Lightly creased, light diagonal crease
touches "w" in Shawcross. Light show through of writing on verso touches "Sh" of
signature. Unsigned book clippings affixed to sheet. Otherwise, fine
condition.
