HARVEY C. BARNUM, JR. ALS: "H C Barnum Jr/Colonel of Marines
(Ret)", 1½p, 8½x11. No place, no date, no salutation. Penned in lower
portion and on verso of an undated TLS to him asking for his most vivid combat
situation. In part: "The action for which I received the medal of Honor. The
entire action proved what Marines are all about...when I assumed command. It
was like I had been assigned to and trained with that company for years. Because
I was in command, they did what I did, when and how I told them to do it...."
From his citation for his actions in the Vietnam War, Ky Phu in Quang Tin
Province, December 18, 1965: "[Then Lieutenant Barnum] with complete
disregard for his safety, gave aid to the dying commander, then removed the

command of the rifle company, and moving at once into the midst of the heavy
fire, rallying and giving encouragement to all units...." Folds, not at signature.
