HAYDEN CARRUTH
Short handwritten letter sent from his home in Johnson,
Vermont
Autograph Letter signed: "Hayden Carruth", 1 page, 6x9.
Crow's Mark, Johnson, Vermont, 1974 April 1. On personal letterhead to
"Dear Mr. Stanhope", in full: "I'm sorry I have no photograph I
can send, but if a plain autograph will help you're welcome to it. Yours
sincerely". Critic, poet and editor Hayden Carruth wrote 30
volumes of poetry, beginning with The Crow and the Heart (1959).
His Scrambled Eggs and Whiskey won the National Book Award (1996),
one of his many literary honors. He was poetry editor at Harper's from
1977 to 1983. Carruth, who loved the countryside of rural Vermont and upstate
New York, wrote poems juxtaposing natural beauty with human despair. He
called regret the "bedrock of all human thought and activity." Environmental
concerns also loomed large in his poetry. Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned.
