HAZEL DAWN
Her ink sentiment on a sheet bearing two magazine photos of her
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Sincerely/Hazel Dawn/1912", 5¼x3½ sheet with b/w magazine photos affixed at left and right edges. Hazel Dawn (1891-1988), born Hazel Tout, was an original Ziegfeld Follies girl (1907). When her father went to Wales as a Mormon missionary, she had the opportunity to study violin and voice in the capitals of Europe. Cast in a supporting role in the operetta The Pink Lady, she stole the limelight with her singing. Soon she was starring in light musicals on both sides of the Atlantic, singing and playing the violin. Dawn made her silent film debut for Famous Players-Laskey in 1914, proving herself in dramatic roles. When she was chosen as mascot at the Army-Navy game, Cadet Dwight Eisenhower was one of the cadets who tossed his hat onto the stage for her. Dawn largely retired from acting after her marriage to wealthy Montana engineer Edward Gruelle (1927). After his death in 1941, she worked in the casting department of the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency. Toned. Heavy adhesive residue on verso (no show through). Irregularly cropped at bottom right edge.
