The musical performer, and opponent of segregation, inscribes her signature to a fan on a card
Autograph Note signed: "To Kayo Ray/Good luck,/Hazel Scott", 4x3 card with 1½x2¾ printed photograph affixed at right. A prodigy who started playing the piano at the age of two, the singer-pianist (1920-1981) achieved fame in the 1940s by "swinging" the classics. Scott was featured in musical inserts in four movies. However, an outspoken opponent of segregation and racism, she was blackballed after she held up production of The Heat's On over a disagreement about racial stereotyping. Scott married Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. in 1945 amid scandal over their affair and his quick divorce. By the mid-1950s, Scott's career and marriage were in decline; in 1956 she and Powell divorced. Scott wrote over some of the letters since the pen was running out of ink. Staple hole touches "R" in Ray. Overall, fine condition.
