Autograph note on photograph signed: "To Normal Jones/from Heather Begg-/New Zealand Mezzo Soprano/Royal Opera/Covent Garden/London/May 1976", "Best Wishes from Heather Begg", b/w 3¾x5½. New Zealand-born mezzo soprano Heather Begg (1932-2009) first received recognition for her talents with her win of the 1955 Sydney Sun Aria Contest, after which she sang as a principal mezzo soprano with the National Opera of Australia. After performing in Australia for much of her early career, Begg traveled to Europe, appearing with the Carl Rosa Opera Company, the New Opera Company, the Royal Opera and the English Opera Group. It was at the Royal Opera House in London where she gained most popularity, performing a variety of roles in her 10 year stay, including Flora in La traviata, Mary in The Flying Dutchman, Emilia in Otello, Mamma Lucia in Cavalleria rusticana, and Marina Mnishek in Boris Godunov. Begg continued to perform for most of her life, finally retiring in 2006 when she began to suffer from leukemia. She was originally appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1978, and before her death in 2009, was redesignated Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Corners and edges slightly worn. Fine condition.
