HEATHER HARPER and WALTER SUSSKIND
The conductor and opera singer both sign their names in 1967
Signatures(s): "Heather Harper", and "Walter Susskind/Feb 67", 6x4, in black ink. February 1967. Two unidentified signatures on verso. British soprano HEATHER HARPER (b. 1930), born in Belfast, made her operatic debut in Medea at Oxford University in 1954. From 1956 to 1975 she was a member of the English Opera Group. She is well known for performances in Wagner's Lohengrin, Strauss's Arabela and Britten's Peter Grimes. She was also a noted concert singer, performing Britten's War Requiem on only 10 days' notice in 1962. WALTER SUSSKIND (1913-1980), born in Prague, became a British subject in 1946. During World War II he was the pianist with the Czech Trio, a chamber ensemble. His greatest fame came as a conductor, however. He conducted, successively, the Carl Rosa Opera Company, the Scottish Orchestra, and the symphony orchestras of Melbourne, Toronto and St Louis. Right edge frayed. Corners lightly worn. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
