HEATHER SEARS
Handwritten letter to a fan, from the Romulus Films studio in Soho
Square
Autograph Letter signed: "Heather Sears", 5¼7x Romulus
Films, 27 Soho Square [London], October 24, n. y. To "Dear Penelope",
in full: "Thank you for your letter. I am enclosing the photograph
which you requested. [Item not included.] I hope you like it. With best
wishes". English actress Heather Sears (1935-1994) preferred regional
theatre to any other genre. She had an unusual contract with Romulus Films which
committed her to films 6 months a year, with the remainder free for stage and TV
work. Sears had her first credited film role in Dry Rot (1956), but
achieved her breakthrough in The Story of Esther Costello (1957),
winning the BAFTA as Best Actress. By the end of that decade, she was
featured in major films including Room at the Top and Sons and
Lovers. Her first London stage appearance was as a replacement for Mary
Ure in Look Back in Anger (1957). Withdrawing from acting for several
years to raise a family, she returned to stage work in the 1970s, and had a
one-woman show as Virginia Woolf. Adhesive residue on top margin. Lightly
toned. Corners slightly worn and creased. Light surface creases. Stain on bottom
margin from adhesive. Fold in center. Otherwise, fine
condition.
