HEDWORTH (MEUX) LAMBTON
The seaman who rose to the rank of admiral of the fleet wrote this letter and included a check for payment
Autograph Letter Signed: “Hedworth Lambton” in black ink, 4¾x7½. Queensferry, Edinburgh, Scotland. Written on September 9, 1902 and stamped September 10, 1902. To “Dear Sir”. In full: “Enclosed cheque for £4 is for my share of the Pilgrims dinner + annual subscription./ Faithfully Yrs". Royal Navy Officer Hedworth Lambton (1856-1929), who became Sir Hedworth Meux in 1910, is best remembered for his actions to aid the British troops at Ladysmith during the Second Boer War. Lambton led a naval brigade that supplied the troops with much needed heavy-duty weaponry: he furnished them with four 12-pounders and two additional guns. Lady Meux admired Lambton for his actions at Ladysmith and named him heir to her fortune on the condition that he change his surname to Meux, which he did following her death. Interestingly, Lambton served as a naval aide-de-camp to both Queen Victoria and King Edward VII. He also participated in the Anglo-Egyptian War and World War I. Toned. 1-inch tear at “ort” of Hedworth. Corners worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
