HELEN HAYES Oscar-winning actor Helen Hayes wrote a letter on the back of this card from London's Victoria and Albert Museum, thanking fellow actor Mary Elizabeth Forbes for a card "on a day when I needed the thoughts and love of my friends". Autograph letter signed "Helen H.". 1 page, 5¾x4. Written on verso of a card from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England. In full: "Darling Mary Elizabeth So many thanks for your sweet card on a day when I needed the thoughts and love of my friends You are most loyal of them all - Blessings". "Mary Elizabeth" is possibly MARY ELIZAEBTH FORBES (1879-1964). Forbes had a few leading lady roles in 1915 but was relegated to smaller roles and even bit parts by 1917. She also had 9 appearances on Broadway between 1905 and 1938. HELEN HAYES (1900-1993, born Helen Hayes Brown in Washington, DC) won the 1931-1932 Academy Award for Best Actress for the title role in The Sin of Madelon Claudet, her first film. After starring in Vanessa, Her Love Story in 1935 for MGM, Hayes returned to Broadway and enjoyed the greatest triumph of her stage career in the title role of Victoria Regina (1935-1938). She earned the sobriquet First Lady of the American Stage, winning Tonys for Happy Birthday (1947), the first year the award was given, and for Time Remembered (1958). A frequent TV guest star from the 1950s to the 1980s, Hayes made occasional films, such as Anastasia (1956) and Airport (1970), winning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the latter. Lightly toned, foxed and creased. Adhesive residue on image (does not show through). Otherwise in fine condition. Previously authenticated by JSA.
