HELEN HAYES Oscar-winning actor Helen Hayes wrote a short thank-you letter in this card for "my darling good luck slippers, and my delicious tea" to fellow actor Mary Elizabeth Forbes. Autograph letter signed "Helen Hayes" in blue ink. 1 page, 3¾x2¾, in a thank you card. In full: "Dear Mary Elizabeth: I can't resist an extra word of thanks for my darling good luck slippers, and my delicious tea. Bless you". "Mary Elizabeth" is probably MARY ELIZAEBTH FORBES (1879-1964). Mary had a few leading lady roles in 1915 but was relegated to smaller roles and even bit parts by 1917. She also had 9 appearances on Broadway between 1905 and 1938. HELEN HAYES (1900-1993, born Helen Hayes Brown in Washington, DC) won the 1931-1932 Academy Award for Best Actress for the title role in The Sin of Madelon Claudet, her first film. After starring in Vanessa, Her Love Story in 1935 for MGM, Hayes returned to Broadway and enjoyed the greatest triumph of her stage career in the title role of Victoria Regina (1935-1938). She earned the sobriquet First Lady of the American Stage, winning Tonys for Happy Birthday (1947), the first year the award was given, and for Time Remembered (1958). A frequent TV guest star from the 1950s to the 1980s, Hayes made occasional films, such as Anastasia (1956) and Airport (1970), winning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the latter. Lightly toned and creased. Random ink stains. Otherwise in fine condition. Previously authenticated by JSA.
