Check signed and endorsed: "Helen Hayes", and on verso "Guy Moneypenny/411 E. 52nd St.", 6x2¾. New York, N. Y., 1940 December 22. Check # 30, drawn on the personal account of Helen Hayes at the National City Bank of New York, payable to Guy Moneypenny for $20. Filled out in Hayes' hand and endorsed by Moneypenny on verso. HELEN HAYES (1900-1993) won the 1931-1932 Academy Award for Best Actress for the title role in The Sin of Madelon Claudet, her first film. After starring in Vanessa, Her Love Story in 1935 for M-G-M, Hayes returned to Broadway and enjoyed the greatest triumph of her stage career in the title role of Victoria Regina (1935-1938). She earned the sobriquet, First Lady of the American Stage, winning Tonys for Happy Birthday (1947), the first year the award was given, and for Time Remembered (1958). A frequent TV guest star from the 1950s to the 1980s, Hayes made occasional films, such as Anastasia (1956) and Airport (1970), winning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the latter. GUY MONEYPENNY made his Broadway debut in the ensemble cast of Helen Hayes' great triumph, Victoria Regina. By 1938, he had moved up to a named part: the Queen's Gentleman. When Hayes moved on to her next Broadway play, "Ladies and Gentlemen", Moneypenny was again in the cast, listed simply as "Performer". Remaining associated with Hayes, Moneypenny played a small role, and also acted as assistant stage manager for her Candle in the Wind (1941-1942). Moneypenny would have one last Broadway credit, as stage manager for another pair of stellar performancers: Lynne Fontanne and Alfred Lunt in The Pirate (1942-1943). Cancellation holes.
