1952. She wrote it in order to arrange a rendezvous to see a play.
Typed note signed: "Helen Hayes" in blue ink. 1 page, 5¼x3, on
3¢ postcard. Dated Dec. 2, 1952, postmarked New York City, Dec. 3, 1952.
Addressed on verso to Miss Helen Claire, New York City. In full:
"I am still hoping that you will be able to join us on this Sunday
afternoon, December 7th, or on Sunday evening, December 14th, to hear Louis
Peterson's new play, 'Take a Giant Step.' If you can be with us on either day
please call my assistant, Miss Mitchell, who is handling the arrangements, at
LAckawanna [sic] 4-2521, Suite 802, 8 West 40th Street. Helen Hayes".
Helen Hayes (1900-1993, Born Helen Hayes Brown in Washington, DC) won
the 1931-1932 Academy Award for Best Actress for the title role in The Sin of
Madelon Claudet, her first film. After starring in Vanessa, Her Love
Story in 1935 for MGM, Hayes returned to Broadway and enjoyed the
greatest triumph of her stage career in the title role of Victoria Regina
(1935-1938). She earned the sobriquet, First Lady of the American Stage, winning
Tonys for Happy Birthday (1947), the first year the award was given, and
for Time Remembered (1958). A frequent TV guest star from the 1950s
to the 1980s, Hayes made occasional films, such as Anastasia (1956) and
Airport (1970), winning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the
latter. Lightly toned and creased. Normal postal stampings, none of which touch
signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
