HELEN JEPSON and CHARLES KULLMAN
Helen Jepson and Charles Kullman sign a program of the Philharmonic Society of New Orleans.
Program signed: "Helen Jepson", and "Charles Kullman", 4p, 6¼x9½. Program of the Philharmonic Society of New Orleans circa 1945, featuring Jepson and Kullman in joint recital. Pencil notes (unknown hand) concerning pieces on the program. Short biographies of Jepson and Kullman on inside of front cover. Signed on front cover. HELEN JEPSON (1904-1997) was beloved by Americans as a native-born operatic soprano on stages dominated by foreign stars. Jepson, also a popular radio voice with the Rudy Vallée and Paul Whiteman bands, made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1935. She was the first to record (with Lawrence Tibbett) the music from Porgy and Bess, and she was featured in the 1938 film, Goldwyn Follies. After a throat ailment forced her retirement in 1947, she was a successful teacher, active in charitable causes. Tenor CHARLES KULLMANN (1903-1983), who had been awarded a scholarship at the Juilliard School of Music, enjoyed great success in Europe before debuting with New York's Metropolitan Opera, where he would remain for a quarter of a century. In addition to his roles with the company, Kullmann was a popular concert attraction, and he was also heard on radio and made a number of recordings. Lightly soiled. Minor nicks at right of lower edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
