Signature: "Helen Faucit/Nov 1833", 2½x1 card affixed to 3x1¼
card affixed to 3¼x2 slip of paper (three surfaces). Printed caption affixed to
slip of paper. Helen Faucit (1817-1898) made her regional stage debut
in 1833 (in Romeo and Juliet), but did not appear on a London
stage (Covent Garden) until 1836. From the latter date, she was recognized
as one of England's most talented actresses. She worked with famed actor William
Charles Macready from 1836 to 1845, and mostly toured thereafter. Faucit was
especially praised for her Shakespearean roles, tragedies and comedies
alike, and there is a tablet dedicated to her at the Shakespeare Memorial in
Stratford-on-Avon. In 1851 she married Theodore Martin, the biographer of Queen
Victoria's consort, Prince Albert. When Martin was knighted, she became Lady
Martin. Adhesive residue at face (not affecting signature). Edges of paper
unevenly cut and creased. Right edge folded back to verso. Mounting residue on
verso. Ink marks at face (lightly affecting signature). Otherwise, fine
condition.
