HELEN FAUCIT (LADY MARTIN)
Signing as Helena Faucit Martin
Signature: "Helena Faucit Martin", 2¼x1¼. Helen Faucit
(1817-1898) made her regional stage debut in 1833 (in Romeo and
Juliet), but did not appear on a London stage (Covent Garden) until
1836. From the latter date, she was recognized as one of England's most
talented actresses. She worked with famed actor William Charles Macready from
1836 to 1845, and mostly toured thereafter. Faucit was especially praised for
her Shakespearean roles, tragedies and comedies alike, and there is a tablet
dedicated to her at the Shakespeare Memorial in Stratford-on-Avon. In 1851 she
married Theodore Martin, the biographer of Queen Victoria's consort, Prince
Albert. When Martin was knighted, she became Lady Martin. Left edge
unevenly cut. Corners lightly creased. Minor surface crease (not affecting
signature). Lightly soiled at face (lightly affecting signature). Otherwise,
fine condition.
